All Good Things Come to an End....

Or, do they?

It’s about time I posted about the amazing weekend I spent in Melbourne with my equally amazing friend, Rachel. We were there to celebrate the end of a fantastic 12WBT round.

After a crazy few days working from our Melbourne office, Rachel flew down and joined me on Friday night and when she arrived, I could see the excitement in her eyes (or, was that just the glass of wine she had on the flight down? Her first glass in 12 weeks!). We’ve both been to Melbourne a few times before but both Rachel and I had absolutely no idea how to get from where we were to St Kilda.  So, we spent the rest of the night trying to work out the tram timetable, ticket prices and tram stops. Considering we needed to be at the Catani Gardens at 7.30am, there was no room for error so we decided at midnight that the only thing to do was race downstairs and do a practice run. We didn’t actually get a tram to St. Kilda but we worked out where to wait for the tram and also how we could purchase tickets.

Waiting for the tram
After what felt like 5 minutes, Saturday morning arrived, alarms went off and we were up and at ‘em! I didn’t get much sleep as I was too excited for what lied ahead so I told myself, you’ll just have to run on adrenalin today. After a quick shower and super quick brekkie, we were out the door. We were so excited that the thought of rain had never crossed our minds but Mother Nature had other ideas. Standing in the middle of the road at the tram stop in the rain, we were hoping that the trams in Melbourne were more reliable than the Sydney trains. Turns out they are and a few minutes later we were on a tram headed to St Kilda. Hurrah, we did it!

With the rain continuing to fall, we made our way to the registration desk and proudly let the organisers know we were there to volunteer. We registered, got all our little knick-knacks then made a beeline for the coffee van. It was absolutely freezing so I ordered a tea, to keep my hands warm more so than anything else.  Standing around the coffee van, we met our fellow volunteer team members (more on these awesome people later) and our team leader who we affectionately called, “boss lady”.  Boss lady handed out our awesome traffic controller vests and volunteer hats and we set about allocating ourselves to the areas where would stand to ‘control the traffic’.  Then, out of nowhere, Mish appeared. She was in her workout gear with headphones around her neck and was looking fit as! She casually strolled over to meet all of us, photos were taken, tears were shed and then it was down to business.

Us traffic controllers toddled off to our allocated areas and started welcoming and ushering the thousands of people who were coming to participate in and smash, the world record for the largest group circuit workout.  The rain continued to fall however Rachel and I persevered, jumping up and down to keep warm and happily greeted the crowd. Now, remember those awesome team members I was telling you about? Well, Sarah, Kristy and Melinda were stationed at other posts so Rachel and I abandoned our post to go and check on them. Sarah and Kristy were enjoying their traffic controller duties (well, ok, maybe Kristy wasn’t enjoying it as much as Sarah!) but they both stuck it out. Melinda had unfortunately been abandoned by her team mate after 5 minutes as it was “too cold” so we hung out with her for a while to keep her company. After a while, we all made our way in to the main, let’s call it an arena, for the group workout. Us traffic controllers were now on Guinness Book of World Record duties and had to assist with counting. No, we didn’t have to count heads, just make a note of anyone that had to leave the arena during the workout for whatever reason. We were able to enjoy and participate in the workout and at the same time, encourage others to keep going. It was truly inspiring! We managed to catch up with most of the SWSYD crew while we there and quickly changed out of our volunteer gear to get a quick photo which was later shared on Mish's 12WBT Facebook Page. There were people of all shapes and sizes and varying fitness levels sweating it out but what was even better was to see them doing it all with a smile on their face. Wow, just wow! I couldn’t believe I was a part of such an amazing family and was lucky enough to be involved in breaking a world record!

The Awesome SWSYD Crew
When the workout ended, Rachel and I made our way back to our apartment and set out to beautify ourselves. Hair was booked for 3pm, make up at 4pm. We decided to take the train as we thought it would be quicker than the 20-minute walk to Melbourne Central (we were on a really tight time schedule). Turns out the trains in Melbourne aren’t as easy to work out as the ones in Sydney so we ended up travelling in the opposite direction to where we needed to be. We eventually arrived at Melbourne Central with a list of things to gather and do. Eat, get band-aids, buy a clutch, purchase tanning products, and get hair & makeup done. We managed to get everything done with time to spare (I don’t know how considering we had no clue where anything was) and made our way back to our apartment with a quick stop for some bubbles and snacks.

On our balcony just before we left for the party!
Getting dressed was easy, hair and makeup was done so just needed to slip on our outfit and shoes and head out the door.  We hailed a cab fairly quickly but the trip to the Plaza Ballroom was anything but quick. People complain that Sydney traffic is bad. I’m sorry to say but Melbourne, your traffic is shocking! When we finally arrived at the venue we huddled out the front and met up with our fellow South West Sydney team member, Elisabeth. We were so excited to get inside but we were waiting on Mish to arrive. This time, she arrived by chauffer driven car and after some quick pics; she made a swift dash inside the venue.

The gorgeous sisters from Adelaide, Sarah and Kristy
The venue was amazing and the crowd quickly filled the room. Rachel and I were determined to find our new awesome friends but one of them found us first. While standing in line for the food, Melinda spotted us so we went and joined her in what we later found out was the ‘flying solo’ bar. We took off to get some more photos taken and while waiting in that line Rachel screamed out “It’s them!” and begun chasing down the lovely Sarah and Kristy! I can’t believe we found them in a sea of 1200 people. It was obviously meant to be. The night continued with lots of dancing, laughing and photos followed by the award ceremony where we witnessed some inspiring transformations from the top 20. I bumped into Margie  in the flying solo bar and just had to tell her how much I enjoyed watching her on Loser. She gave me a huge hug and Lis and I managed to get a quick snap with her. Mish even came and boogied with us on the dance floor to Maroon 5’s Moves Like Jagger.  WHAT A NIGHT!

Rachel and I woke up the next morning wanting to do it all over again and we can... in 3 months! Round 2 officially started today and I’m super excited to see the results that my friends (new and old) and SWSYD crew achieve, as well as my own!

Meeting Margie!

Until next time,

The best birthdays are the ones that haven't arrived yet!

On Friday 4th May (AKA Star Wars day*), I celebrated my 31st Birthday. However, as my darling friend Kathryn pointed out to me this morning "Baby, you may be a year older but I bet your body is feeling younger than you have been for your last 5 birthdays!" and she's right. I feel amazing. I'm fitter, healthier, stronger and happier than I've ever been in my entire 31 years.

So to prove it to myself, I've decided to have a bio age test done and see how old (or young) my body thinks I am. I've looked into a few places but I will check if my gym offers it before I go anywhere else. I would put money on the fact that I've already gained a few years of my life back after just 1 round of the 12WBT.

The best birthdays really are the ones that haven't arrived yet and I intend to look forward to and enjoy every one of them from here on in. I have a very happy, healthy life ahead of me so really, why not celebrate that? Bring on the next 31 years... I'm ready! And, if at 62 years of age I look half as good as the gorgeous Helen Mirren does, I'll be one very happy 62 year old.

Va Va Voom!
Bye for now,
Danni

*I have never seen a single Star Wars movie but after years of being greeted with 'Happy Star Wars Day' instead of 'Happy Birthday', I thought I'd share this little fact with you so you too can share in the lameness of it :) Is lameness even a word?

It may be the end, but it's only the beginning!

I was a bundle of nerves this morning when stepping on to the scales. Not only was it the final weigh in day for Round 1 of the 12WBT but I didn't have a great week with my nutrition or exercise. I was pleasantly surprised to see 82 flash up on the scales, that's 1 kilo less than last week. I must not have been as bad as I thought I had!

Looking back on all that happened in Round 1, no one (except maybe Mish) would have blamed me if I gave up. I had setback after setback starting with major surgery in Week 2 to have my gall bladder removed. I was unable to exercise for 2 weeks and then when I did go back to the gym I could only do light activities. In Week 5 I discovered I had shin splints which limited the training I could do. In Week 7 after giving swimming a go to ease the pressure on my shins, I obtained an ear infection. Then, in Week 9, I was sent to emergency after I had been getting severe  sudden onset of pain in my head 3 days in a row when exercising and was told to rest for 1 week. Before starting the 12WBT I would have given up over something as small as a sniffly nose so I'm glad that although my body was letting me down, my mind was strong enough to push through.

How did I do it?

  • Revisited the goals I had set for myself in pre-season
  • Reminded myself of why I joined the 12WBT in the first place
  • Thought back to how it felt to see that I'd lost weight when I jumped on the scales
  • Posted in the South West Sydney Facebook group for support
  • And most importantly, I just switched off my brain and JUST FRICKEN DID IT

What's next? Pre season for Round 2 officially starts on Monday 7th May and Mish will release two tasks a week until 4th June when Round 2 officially kicks off. Although I am aware of what these tasks are likely to be as I did them all before Round 1, I am going to commit 100% to them and complete them all over again. Why do something I've already done? Because, I truly believe that if it wasn't for the pre-season tasks, I wouldn't have made it through Round 1 and been so successful.

So, whilst this Round 1 has come to an end, I'm certainly not finished. In fact, it's only the beginning for me! I have already started thinking about what I want to achieve in the next round and how I'm going to get there. WATCH THIS SPACE!
Bye for now,

You've come a long way, baby!

I'm Danni, I'm 30 and I'm obese.

But, I'm well on my way to changing that.

Since joining the Michelle Bridges 12 Week Body Transformation my BMI has come down from a whopping 40 to a healthier but still a long way to go, 34.

Scary

Still scary but not as bad

In the last 15 weeks I have lost 14.8 kilos and it's only now that I'm starting to realise how far I have come.

2 days ago I worked up the courage to create a video blog about my journey which made me wish I had started documenting it sooner. So, at that moment, I decided that I would start blogging about the things I learn, my achievements, my highs and lows, my goals and what I've been up to.

When I signed up for round 1, 2012 I was bursting at the seams with excitement, nerves and fear. I've just signed up to round 2 and whilst the nerves and fear have subsided, I'm still feeling extremely excited! It is a different kind of excitement, though. I know what to expect this time so, rather than focussing on how this and that works, I will be focussing more of my energy on the goals that I will be setting for myself in pre-season (more on that later). I now know that I am capable of achieving anything I put my mind to so I'm super pumped to see what I will achieve in the next 3 months.

Next Wednesday is the last official weigh in day for Round 1 of the 12WBT. I'm aiming for a 1.2 kilo loss to bring my overall total loss to 16 kilos but I honestly will be happy with whatever number I lose.

On that note,

I'll leave you with this, my first video blog.

Bye for now,
Danni
